Whitby, North Yorkshire
Whitby is a beautiful coastal town in North Yorkshire in England. It is a very atmospheric place with much history. On the East cliff sits Whitby Abbey, the ruin of a 7th/8th Century Benedictine abbey. There are 199 steps leading up to the Abbey. The abbey gave inspiration to Bram Stoker to write the story of Dracula and it is there that he arrived on the shores of England. Whitby is a bustling community with something to suit every visitor. For the children there are the arcades, there are pubs a plenty, the best fish and chips in the UK-try the Magpie and you wont ever want to go anywhere else again. There is every type of shop you could wish for from little shops in nooks and crannies or the big high street stores. Whitbys association with Dracula makes the fact that twice yearly the Gothic community gather there even more understandable. In October and April every year the Whitby Goth Weekend takes place with stalls of every type whether it's shoes, clothes, music or jewellery that you are after. The Pavilion hosts many bands on the Saturday evening. Whitby seems to welcome the influx of the Gothic community. There are a number of shops especially dedicated to Gothic wear and during these weekends you can hardly stir for the number of people trying to get into them. The variation of Gothic fashions is so great from old 80's goth style, Cyber goths, Emos and the beautiful peacocks that dress in elegant victorian fashions. It is so satisfying to see the pensioners on their day trips chatting and taking photos of the black clad folks who at times could appear quite intimidating. They soon realise that there is a nice person underneath all the makeup and hairdos and just want to know what it's all about. What is it all about? It's just a lot of like minded people who like to dress up and express themselves in the manner they wish in a beautiful seaside town filled with Gothic connotations and the chance to shop til you drop. |
