Egyptian holiday
In 2005, my partner, his daughter and I went to Egypt. We went on a two week holiday, the first week we stayed in Luxor and the second week was in El Gouna on the Red Sea. My main love in life is ancient egypt so this was quite a treat. The hotel we stayed in in Luxor was called Le Meridian although I think it is now the Nile Palace. Initially we had a room overlooking the roads but after 2 nights of being woken at 4 am with the call to the mosque we asked for another room which overlooked the beautiful courtyard which contains 4 restaurants. There is music every night and such a beautiful ambience. Breakfast is served in the restaurant overlooking the outside pool which is right beside the Nile. The service at the hotel was wonderful and the hotel was so spotlessly clean. We went on a number of trips, up at 5 or so to get to the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsuts Temple and the Ramesseum. The heat of the day is just so awesome I have never felt so hot. You would think the tombs in the Valley of the Kings would be a bit cooler-uh huh they're not and when you have walked 180 feet down into one of them and have to walk back up you realise you left all your energy outside!!! The sights are just absolutely out of this world. Karnak and Luxor Temple are exceptionally inspiring, the statues so realistic looking. Of course my other half knew everything there was to know about Karnak-of course, he's played Tomb Raider!!! The Luxor museum is well worth a look where you will find a wonderful collection of statues and mummies and artifacts. It doesnt look very big but we must have been in an hour and a half. The only thing that I think would upset the faint hearted is the children asking for baksheesh. At one point we had one trying to prize taxi money out of my partners hand- and his dad was the taxi driver! After the first week in Luxor we travelled to El Gouna. Now that was an experience. Having got used to the armed guards outside on the street, it was still a bit surprising to see that we were part of a convoy on a 5 hour journey across Egypt to the Red Sea. This part of the trip was the relaxing bit, although if I had my way it would have been 2 weeks of tombs and temples but hey, I can compromise. El Gouna is in the region of Hurghada and is all manmade. The hotel there was the Movenpick and it was an absolutely sprawling hotel, consisting of over 500 rooms. The grounds were so big the luggage was taken to the rooms in a golf cart!It has 3 big pools, restaurants-one of them a fantastic thai restaurant, shops. The hotel was extremely well maintained and the security was the tops. Bearing in mind that the bombings in Sharm El Sheikh occurred at the time we were in Egypt, the security was stepped up to a higher level than before but you never felt in any danger. Since then a number of people I have spoken to have expressed their fears at travelling to Egypt but it would never stop me returning. The hotel was right on the Red Sea, walk out of the pool and you are in it. My partner and I didnt go scuba diving but we swam out to a nearby floating raft which was anchored just off a coral reef and saw all sorts of wonderful fish. The hotel was part of a number of hotels that all shared a town with a marina which was just called Down Town. You could go to any hotel restaurant for a meal on the resort or go to the ones in Down Town and experience the music and dancing of the Whirling Dervishes and belly dancers. All in all an absolutely fantastic experience. Next time to Egypt will be a Nile cruise taking in Cairo, Luxor and Abu Simbel. Might be long way off but its something to dream about... |
